Default Priceless, You should have seen the guy smile...

I met him at the local Legion Hall at the every Friday night polka dance last fall. He said his family had farmed South of here about 20 miles, since before he's been around (he's got to be in his 80's now).

Lookin' to find an engine, I had to ask if there were any around the farm. He said they had a JD that used to run a water pump when he was a kid, but they didn't want to sell it.

I ran into him again a few weeks ago, and told him that even though he didn't want to sell it, I would like to make it run again for him and the family (and for my own enjoyment).

He brought it over about 3 weeks ago. We did some research and found it to be a 1928 model JD E 1-1/2hp ignitor model. The insides were clean with no rust. The gas tank had been brazed up all across the bottom, and was now leaking through pinholes in the sides. The top of the gas tank (oil pan) was also full of rust holes and dripping the oil into the gas tank.

We got the new tank and pan from H&M yesterday and sealed up everything and let it sit over night. Fired up right away tonight with a battery and coil rigged to it. After running, we switched it to the mag, and it kept on going. We've started it several times on the mag now.

The owner came over and was grinning from ear to ear hearing it run again. He should be back in a couple days with his son to check it out.

Here's a video of it running...

This was a nice little project, and what a sweet running engine!

Later, Scooter Bob and Karen

It's not ours. We would be really happy if he would let us drag it along to the shows this summer, but it's not ours either way.

It was just a pleasure to get it running. I do hope we earned first dibs if they ever decide to sell it.

Here's a couple pics of the little project.

That was pretty much a win/win for everybody. Those JD E's are sweet engines. We have one that runs an old pump that circulates water off a 55 gal barrel. We can get a lot of people wet if we want. Lots of fun.

Nice work. Thats what it is all about. I have almost the same story about 10 years ago. For an old neighbor. I also have another 1 1/2 JD E in my garage that I got running for a friend of mine that he brought over from his father in laws too. We got it to run and they couldn't be happier.
