Default 1 h.p. ideal engine

I recently came across a nicely restored 1 h.p. horizontal Ideal air cooled engine. The seller is asking $800 for it. I like the engine but do not know if it is worth $800. Is that a fair price to pay? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I have two Ideals and must say that I hate the governor set up on them. If you wanted to run them at their rated RPM's and gave them a little load, they run nice, but try to slow them down to just an occasional putt.....and all you hear and see is the governor clunking and banging. It's a very primitive governor....it makes you think it should have stone flywheels. I think $800 is way too much! Sorry if this offends any Ideal lovers as it is just my opinion.

Hi Jerry, This is just my opion,I was kind of disappointed in the Ideal,We had mine ruuning at Coolsprings for a short time and I think it sounds kind of like a glorified Maytag,I was really hoping for a more soothing sound ,as far as price I think it depends on if the tin shroad is there,I have seen nicely retsored ideals with it and without,I lucked out at Coolsprings and found an original for mine,I can't really say about the price,I purchased mine in a group package deal,But have seen them here in Pennslyvania priced at 1000.00+ to as low as $650.00.I quess it depends on how much you like the engine and how mcuh your willing to spend,Try haggling with him maybe he'll come down in price.I hope this helps
