Testing a 15 KW JC

How can I test run my 15 KW JC before hooking up control wires to my LTEU transfer switch? These wires were connected to the generator when I bought it. I can get ignition without a problem, but can't sustain the engine without holding down the start switch, which is not a good thing to do. I figure I would need to hot wire the coil, unless possibly there are two control wires I can temporarily connect to accomplish the same thing.

If you have to hold the Start Switch to keep the Engine running, then you
have a FAULT in the Safety Shutdown System on your genset. Check
the Centrifical Switch (S1), the Low Oil Pressure Switch (S4) and the High
Temp Switch (S2) for proper operation. This is all covered in the YD
Generator and Controls Service Manual, Onan #900-0184, which is the GOLD
STANDARD for working on J Series Onan Generator Systems.

I would check the S1 switch first.It is by the oil filter under a cover.If the points do not close the unit will not run.You may not have the high temp switch.If you do it is mounted on the exhaust manifold.As Bruse said buy the manual it will cover all you need to know.

Bruce and Billy, thank you for your help again. The S1 closed OK. My very helpful neighbor determined that the fuse I used to replace a burned out one was too short (he noticed the screw down knob seemed loose). Sure enought, I inserted a small spring in this cap, and the generator took right off. We ran it for twenty minutes, and stopped and restarted it. I noticed the oil pressure seemed quite high (50 psi, if that is the right unit). It drifted down to 40 after about fifiteen minutes, but I remember reading that 20 psi was normal.

Now to get the output converted from 3-phase to single-phase. As I recall, the required wiring schematic should be printed on the inside panel under the ammeter. I don't understand the V lead wire needing to go from V4 to V1 though.

V leads are on the voltage regulator, small jumpers.

Gunny, thanks again. The V lead was already jumped from V4 to V1, from the 3-phase setup.

I'm getting closer to making my generator operational, and am going to change the oil and oil filter. I got seven quarts of 0-40W Mobil 1 and a Napa Gold 1084 filter, but noticed that the presently installed oil filter is an Onan 122-0193. It is 5 1/2 inches long from base to top of nut, while the 1084 is only 4 inches. Is this cause for concern?

Yes the 1084 is the correct filter. Got a nut welded on the end.

Gunny, my error on the oil designation. It is 0W-40 Mobil. I've attached a picture.
