This is a work in progress, it has been at NAMES expo and this year. Rich and his wife had to leave the show before it started due to health concerns of his wife. It did work out well for his wife, but not for the people looking for the engines progress and the people who wanted to talk to Rich about it.
Here are the new pictures of the engine you didn't get to see at NAMES this year. The Engine is Ericssons "Vibrating Lever Engine" It was used in the USS Monitor 1862 iron clad that was the subject of a tv show and display at a museum. For the purist out there. A more approriate description is a Half "Trunk Back Acting Lever Engine" The model is in 1/16 scale and is really only finished from the crankshaft down. The cylinder, straboard valve chest(one side only)and "rocking" lever (one side only) were added for the NAMES show and do not reflect all the other parts that are to be added as well. All the parts are from solid stock and NO CASTINGS ARE USED. The revesrsing gear contorl shaft has a (true) .171-32 Square thread as well as the nut in the picture. The nut is placed in the yoke at the top of the photo and locked in place with the little "ring" nut which is a 7/32-28 thread. All Parts are made as true to prototype as possible, including .032x.032x.078 keys in ,many pieces. My Best Rich And yes, that Y pipe ( steam inlet at the top of the engine) is hollow and you have to go to NAMES to find out how its done. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Any spelling errors are mine not Rich's as I transcribed this. He probably spends more time researching the item he is building then most spend building a model. I know that the so called experts from the smithy musem had assembled the parts wrong at the museum its at when they worked on the engine. His drawings of this engine are the only known complete set that a working engine could be built from. His attention to the detail from the finish of the parts to the keyways is totaly mind bending.Either inside or outside of the model if the part can be duplicated he does. And the other thing If I remember corectly he uses full sized machines not mini's. And the best think is his approach is keep it simple, as far as the set uops and techniques to do the machining. glen |
