Default Mogul engine brought back to life

An engine friend, Tom Schmutz of central VA asked if I wanted to come along and help him with getting a big portable Mogul that had been in a particular family since the 20's. The engine originally ran a wood plain for a general store. The engine was sold but two years ago the grandson of the owner was able to purchase the engine and bring it back into the immediate family. He and his son didn't know anything about engines so Tom and I helped them get the engine running. It took a couple of hours for us to go through and make sure everything was adjusted but in the end she fired off like Moguls do and ran well. You can go to Tom's site and see more photos.

Rob,

It's a 12hp. This is the second time I have seen a "non-collector" paint an International red and silver. There must be some photo somewhere of one that people see. I guess people see the tractors and figure the engine should look the same. It took us longer to get it going than anticipated because the governor linkage was not set right and we initially were trying to start with the butterfly closed; that didn't work out too well. It was hard to walk away from that without making an offer but the family is thrilled to have the engine and it is definitely not for sale.

Here are a couple more photos of the Mogul:

Photo 1 is when I first saw the engine in the shed.
Photo 6 and 7 are of it running.

Martin/Tom: Many years ago when I got my 10HP portable , it was also painted red, and that's the way it still is . Those Moguls sure do run nice and I don't blame them for not wanting to part with it.

The brothers are not engine people, but they own it and that is what they wanted to do.
