The Maytag coils are pretty fragile, and usually weak.
The two spark plug wires are the ends of the secondary coil. So the spark will occur between them. Don't do anything to force the coil to fire a spark beyond a reasonable gap. About 3/8" or less. It takes more voltage to jump a larger gap and will destroy the insulation on this coil pretty quick.
If you set the two spark plug wire ends at about 3/8" or less gap, then connect a 9 volt transistor battery to the grounded primary of the coil, then touch the primary coil wire that goes to the points to the plus on the battery momentarily, a spark should occur at the spark plug wire gap. You may have to reduce the gap to 1/4" to get a spark. If your coil will spark, but not the full 3/8" you may have to run your spark plugs at a smaller gap than normal. I run mine at about .018" Hope this helps.

Exclamation Re: Maytag Eisemann Coil

As far as I know, no one is making replacement coils for either the Eismann D or DA magnetos at this time. I understand that someone is making one for the WICO version though, but it will NOT FIT the Eismann versions. I wish some one would, there seems to be an abundance of maytag twins in need of mag coils

Andrew,
I agree with you on the lack of availablity of Model 72 coils. If I can fine the specs on the number of winding of both the primary and secondary and the Gauge of the wire used, I am looking into setting up to make these coils as I an tired of not having anybody available to wind them. I hope to get something going soon.

Stalt, The Eisemann 72A,B & C used same coils. 23049 or H23-049. With coil wires disconnected from everything check between the points wire to the spark plug wire output on coil that is the secondard reading. Max secondary reading about 8000 ohms. Way over that or no reading at all it's shorted out. Max primary reading between the points wire and ground wire should be 1.8 ohms or bit less. These come from the Graham Lee coil & condenser test specs booklet. A firing heat load test should only be done on a coil tester made for such. Battery voltage is just going to fry the coil keep a battery off it ! Check with some of the sponsors links on here or others. Bob's Small Engine Repair use to have repro coils but their site says out of stock. Try Mainley Magneto or Mark's Magneto or others to see if they are maybe winding any. Eisemann 72A,B & C flywheel mags with same coils were also used on Neptune, Champion & Water Witch outboard motors. For a condenser you can use other condensers or a 0.22 mfd, 600V mylar film capacitor.

I bought one of Zack coils. The coils are well built and easy to instal on the core. The coil gives a good hot spark. My twin Maytag runs like new.For145$ this coil was well worth the money.
