Set spark plug gap at .015. That might help.

I have since pulled the engine and it is sitting in my garage. I did a capetown test and found my rings are leaking and it would need a head gasket also.

I think that the lack of compression is why the plug was dry. It was not pulling fuel thru the carb.

If I ever play with it later I will also try tightening up the plug gap.

That would be a fuel restriction.

Compression has to be extreemly low that it would not pull in any fuel. And i mean well below anything as low as 20 P.S.I

And even THEN, you'll still pull a little fuel.

What is a "capetown test?"

A "capetown" test would be auto correct for leak down test.

My leak down showed 35% loss at 100 psi. It would not even fire with starting fluid with the carb removed.

There is a hidden mechanical trouble then. And thats were good diagnosis comes in.

But your not loosing any great preasures to need to be severly alarmed. You do have worn rings but...BUT, these were not high compression engines eaither and running your valves in on worn rings tends to compound trouble that may have not existed before.
