Default Ford 6000 diesel engine parts

I have a Ford 6000 diesel tractor which needs some work on the engine, as I am in the UK parts are even more difficult to find I will need crank and rod bearings, piston rings and a gasket set for starters, the list may get longer as work progresses !!
Any help is much appreciated

I am working on one of those 3 cylinder Ford diesels now. I ordered parts from NAPA one day and they had them the next.

Thanks,
I will try NAPA
sometimes it isn't easy when you are 3000 miles off parts
and parts for the 6000 seem hard to find if i can get the engine running sweet I will be happy

Same parts in 6000 as 6610, 6700, 6710. Very available. There should be several places within driving distance from you. Email and we can give you contact info.

Brian: You need to clear up a few things. In the early 1960's Ford produced the 6000 diesel tractor. It is quite different from the later 6000 series tractors. Which one are you working on?

That would be my question also. If both manifolds are on the same side, and the engine has the exposed drive for the injection pump, that's the older version. The later engine has the intake and exhaust on opposite sides of the engines. AFAIK, they both hail from the UK.

Hi
The Ford 6000 I am working on is the American 6000(1961-66) with the 6 cylinder 242 diesel engine and selectospeed transmission and accumulator hydraulics , yes that one !! It was shipped accross to the UK about 10 years ago,I know that they are even kinda scarce in the USA.
Some engine parts, bearings are the same as the Ford 223 L6 gas engine as used in the Ford Fairlane of that era,

I am not working on a 6600,6700 or similar which is a 5000 deivative and as you say is made in the UK, parts are readily available in the UK from many sources.

I have most other parts to repair the tractor, I have spare hydraulic and steering pumps and all the panels, hood fenders etc..Think I must have the biggest stock of 6000 parts this side of the pond
And I know a man who specialises in the repair of Selectospeed transmissions here in the UK so if I have transmission problems I can contact him.
Brian

Do you have the engine apart? The reason I ask is so you know what size bearings & rings you may need.

I am well on the way to getting the engine out, I have a set of good standard pistons and am going to bore and sleeve the block to take these pistons as the bores are a mix of 2 with 20 thou oversize and 4 at 30 thou oversize and you can see past the rings and the ring gap of about 10mm past the pistons when they are still in the motor no wonder it ran a bit oily!!

One furthur question,
in the I&T service manual that I have for this tractor it says that in the diesel engine that the crankshaft should NOT be ground,
Has anyone ground the crank in a 6000 diesel?

I would assume that this was Ford not wanting to stand to crankshaft failures in a tractor that had already cost them plenty!

I've heard that some of this era tractors had what are called Tuf-Tided crankshafts which cannot be ground which may be the reason Ford gave that warning. Ed B

I managed to get the engine out and dismantled today and judging by what I found, not a day too soon!
one rod bearing was well melted and would soon have started to rattle or even find its way out through the side, the main shell bearings are well worn too looking more copper in colour than they should. Next job is to put the vernier on the crank and see how badly worn it is.
I have managed to free off all the rings in my set of standard pistons and will need a set of standard piston rings as the rings were rusted in. It is a3.625 in bore with a 4 ring piston 2 top chrome rings 3rd compression ring has a flat spring behind it and a Oil ring for the bottom ring.
Get it cleaned off and find someone to sleeve the block and bore it back to standard.
Fun just beginning!!

Ho Ho the fun is progressing slowly, I have got the crank and block back from the repair shop and its looking good, I have had to reuse a mix of pistons as some were scrap or had cracked skirts and got rings to fit the pistons.I have sent a friend,,who lives in Iowa, shopping at NAPA for the bearings and gaskets . I am having made some new diesel head gaskets and manifold gaskets and am considering getting a quantity made, is there anyone out there needs any, if so pm me or send me an email through smokstak head gaskets are around$45 and manifold gaskets £15 each plus shipping

Brian,

Try Long Lane Tractor, they specialize in Ford tractors, I know they had a few 6000's in the parts yard when I was out there recently.

Thank you for the link to some parts tractors, it might come in helpful at a later date.I am starting from the front and rebuilding the front axle.I have it all stripped down and cleaned off ready to paint, I have managed to cross reference some new hubs for the front wheels, they are the same as those used on the Ford 2000 up to Ford 4600. Here is also the bare block and crank as they came back from the engine re conditioners.
