Default Onan 2800 microlite

glad i found this site.
I have a 2800 micro lite. model 2.8 KVFA26100E
Serial J95344038

Starts and runs for 15 mins and shuts down. wait a few and it will start and fun again for a bit. I know the altitude is messed up, does not look like the picture.

I'm not at all familiar with your gen or engine. That's something a condenser could do. I don't know your tank setup, but mine will die after a bit if I don't open the air inlet on the tank. Also sometimes a coil will fail hot. Sooo there's a few ideas. Best of luck!

Service manual? No problem! You just have to tell us where to send it. We need an email address that can accept a couple of 3Mb files.

Manuals sent. This is what I would try first:

Change the spark plug, Champion RL95YC, and fuel filter. Make sure the RV gas tank is full or near full, since there is a separate fuel pickup for the generator so it cannot run the tank out of gas. Loosen the gas cap and leave it loose while running the generator. If it continues to run, the gas cap is holding a vacuum that starves the generator of fuel.

Buy a gap type spark tester and insert it between the spark plug boot and the spark plug. When the generator quits, crank it and watch the spark tester. If the spark is present but the generator doesn't start, the ignition system is OK.

The altitude adjustment is just another name for the high speed mixture adjustment.

I bought a new spark plug but they did not have a tester.
Installed the new spark plug, set the altitude needle to spec. Fired right up and ran great for 30 seconds, shuttered and then ran fine - gas cap off - stalled but started right back up, ran for 30 seconds and shut back down. Would not re-start.
Check coil ohms - no resistance from terminal to ground suppose to be .50, Terminal to plug end is 1197, suppose to be 1100. I am getting 1.3 volts through the coli constant, hit the button and it veries between 4 to 12 volts.
There no spark gounding the plug.

I am guessing a bad coil???

Check the oil level, make sure it is full. Low oil level will shut the generator down.

Disconnect the oil level switch and try running again. Onan had a lot of trouble with the oil level switches, and stopped using them in later versions. If the generator now continues running with the low oil level switch disconnected, the switch is defective.

Now that you have isolated the shutdown problem to no spark, it's time to check the ignition system, which consists of a coil, a magneto pickup, the low oil sensor, and the control board.

The oil sensor is shown on page 6 of the parts manual, and is labeled 11 - Switch, Low Oil Pressure. It's actually a level switch, not a pressure switch, because there is no oil pump or oil filter on this model, which uses splash lubrication.

I would suggest trying the easy steps first. When the generator shuts down, perform step 2 of the the Magneto Assembly check as shown on page 8-10 of the service manual. A resistance reading of zero ohms indicates the oil level switch is grounding out the magneto and shutting down the engine.

Rain finally stopped so dropped the Genset out of the camper. Raised the cover enough to see the Z-1 low oil level swith and pulled it. started the gen and ran like a champ for 7 mins. I was messing with the A/C in the camper so operator error. Tried starting and it was flooded, hit and black smoke, final got it started and it ran for 30 mins until I shut it down. trired to start it aginad and it would hit but shot black smoke. Got it started and adjusted the idle screw accoding to the manual. starts and runs great.
Thanks Kevin

The oil level switch was not used on the later models. To many problems with false shutdowns. So Onan stopped using it.
