Loren~

Sure would be nice!!! No Case engines, though I think the BYB shows some proto types that never went into production. Not fortunate enough or rich enough to own my own BYB so I am just going from memory. My grandfather bought a CASE 311 tractor brand new in 1958. Traded an old Silver King in on it. My dad has it now. Runs like a top!

Loren there are Case engines in the book "American Gasoline Engines Since 1872", looks like they weren't too successful, they started around 1893 and peaked around 1913. During the 1920s they tried again to get into the market it says they preferred to refine there gas tractors rather than develope stationary engines. Looks like they are rare, it says that some of these models are not know to exist. Hope you found one. The ones built up to 1913 were hopper cooled horizontal engines ( nice looking) the ones in the 1920s were vertical with a radiator. Danny

THe Case engine history in the BYB is a little bit off, I think Wendel's Case book is more accurate, but I've researched them myself, so here goes.

During the 1890s (about 1894-1898, going off memory) Case built the Raymond engines under liscense. These ranged from single cylinder up to at least four cylinders. They had rotary valves, and weren't the most successful, often having maintenence problems. Case actually sold several hundred of these engines, never heard of one existing today. They were larger, stationary industrial type engines. Case planned a redesign in the late 90's but apparently got too busy with the new side crank traction engines to continue. Jesse Walrath, who was Case's superintendent and very enthusiastic about gas engines, was replaced by George Morris, who had designed the side cranks.

The prototype engines that Case built in the early teens were completly unrelated to the earlier engines- there was in fact something like a ten year hiatus in Case development. The new engines were design by D.P. Davies, who had participated in the Patterson tractor experiments at Case, then went to Allis, where he was involved in large gas engine development, spending an extensive amount of time in Europe. He came back to Case about 1910 to resume gas tractor development, and also developed a line of farm-type stationary engines. They were never produced, but Case still has the engineering for them. Don't know if they've got Raymond drawings or not- Case only started doing traditional drawings about then.

I have 2 original factory photos of a 6 HP engine that case made. The photos are dated 9-24-13. I will scan them and email them to some one to post if they contact me. One photo is side view and other is front view. It is a full base, ignitor fired, hopper cooled, very complex engine. You can see why Case stayed out of the farm engine business.

Many years ago I received a picture of about a 2HP engine which was represented as a Case. I couldn't get together with the owner on a firm price and besides it was in the NE and way to far for me to go and look at. I know Case tried about everything so not much doubt in my mind there was a smaller stationary engine made by Case but I can't prove it. I was also a Case collector and really would have liked to acquire a Case engine. Now my Case collection consists of manuals, catalogs, and some misc like a stick pin, post card, etc. Ed

These 2 pictures are part of my collection of over 100 CASE factory photos. I have bought them from people who worked at Case and picked them out of a dumpster. This is what happens when companys merge and new people come in and old stuff gets tossed out.

About the engine. It is called a 6 HP.It is hopper cooled and I am still trying to figure why what probably was a Case eagle decal was painted over. Has a full base, closed crank case, ignitor fired, automatic intake valve, and a speed control to name a few features. It appears that it would be expensive to make and could not compete with other farm engines and that is why they stayed out of that market. Photo dated 9/27/13

I also have factory photos (7) of the 60 HP tractor engine as a stationary engine. All these pictures were taken in late 1913

I thank Steve Barr for posting pics for me.
