Default 1957 military 1.5kw generator, 2a016-III wont stay running ( anyone know these?)

Hey guys ,I have a post on the vintage Onan gen section and got so much help that i figured i would post about my little gen set as well.

I went to the flea market sunday and found an old generator for $100 , Its dated 1957 with a 2 cylnder air cooled motor 2a016-III , The old man that had it started it up and it ran for a minute or so, I ended up buying it with the metal cover to go with it . I have been wanting one of these to power my out building for a while now , I got it home and now i can not keep it running. It will start and run for a few seconds , I found the manual online to it , I set the needles where the manual said and its still doing the same thing , I sprayed the carb out with carb cleaner , I checked the pump , it sprays a nice burst every time i hit the prime leaver , I did notice after i dumped the fuel filter and put it back together that the pump would only fill it half way up then it did not have enough power to fill it the rest of the way , I had to loosen it so air could escape and once i did that the pump completly filled the filter up, I took the fuel line loose from the carb and i got a strong stream from the fuel line on the carb side when i pumped it.. I have tried moving the throttle adjustment and choke to all positions to start it and still the same thing , Occasionally it will run for a few seconds but most of the time it does not hit at all. I did keep it running once for about a minute by moving the choke from full to 1/2 choke back and forth to keep it going but it died.

I have checked everything i can think of , Fuel is turned on , Kill switch is set to run , Breaker is off on the genny side , checked plugs they seem ok
I bought reg carb cleaner , I was able to remove and spray it through the needle valve openings , The idle control sprays through , the main needle valve sprays through , there is a long needle on top of the car that i removed and cleaned out , it was a little dirty , Then i took the fuel line off and the part it threads into the car , It has a large opening but small hole in the back , I tried to spray it out but the carb cleaner just sprays back out the way it went in , It seems to be clogged , My next step will be to remove float bowl and clean it out. If this does not work i will get some berryman when autozone gets it back in friday

It is a wisconsin motor corp
The engine plate reads ( took a pic of it the other day for info )
Engine Gasoline , 4 cycle overhead valve
2 cylinder ,
16cu ,
stock fsn-2805-072-4871 ,
Serial N-0396XX , ( i am weird about posting Serial #s online )
Model 2a016-III ,
manual tm5-2805-208 ,
date 11-57 ,
contract da-23-195-amc-00808(t),
Contractor Continental Motors corp ,
mfd by sub wisconsin motor corp

I can not find a name on the carb but it does have #s on the carburator
# on the side of the carb reads 9786e27 The carburator has a bellows to blow air into the points box , The # on the bellows is 9786 e63-2

If anyone has worked on these and have an idea of what i need to do to get it started i would appreciate any help i can get on this =)

Ps .. Love the sound of this little engine when its running =)

The 2a016 was a contract motor produced under contract for the military by several vendors using the same plans and specs.
Saturn surplus in PA has lots of parts for them.

PM me a email addy for the Manuals for the Engine. I the manuals for the 1A08, 2A016 & 4A032 engines.

Ethanol causes issues with the diaphragm in the pump as well as the carb float (unless it was one of the seemingly rare brass ones)

Update .. Tried to locate the float locally , No luck at all

Did find the carb data tag
Marvel-schebler , HMC-10 , 10-5057 , 70y

Anyone know where i can find a rebuild kit or a float for the carb?

I have her running , i readjusted it after sanding the edge of the float ( coark ) to make it move freely . I have the carb and everything adjusted so its showing 120 v on the generator side , It has a gauge that shows ac Amps , what should this be reading? Its staying near 0 , I hooked up a drill press and regular drill to it and she powered them both nicely , I tried my compressor but it would not work with it =( I have a 5 gal wheeled compressor , About how many watts should it pull?

I am so excited about it . I did notice a small oil leak but i will worry about tracing that down a little later when i am off work again.

Thanks Ed Sparks , I looked them up online and called them , No floats =( they have the complete carburators for $72. What kind of paint would you recomend coating the sanded part of the float with to help keep gas off of the coark?

one of the sponsors here at the stak sells a coating designed to seal them against the alco gas. click on the sponsor link at the top of the page.

i have 7 of these engines and have worked on them quite a bit in the last 13 years . the floats swell with the use of ethonol gas. if you sanded the float get it out of the carb and let it dry in the sun as much as possable for a week or so to let the float return to its origenal size. these floats are made of foam coat it with 6 coats of gas tank sealer from lee w pedersen use a small artist paint brush to apply let dry over night between coats and fill all imperfections with sealer also make shure you get it coated good where the foam meets the metal float arm. even after sealing i would run the engine with the fuel shut off til the engine quits every time you are done using it. this keeps this sh** gas from doing damage to the rest of the carb. if you need gaskets send me a pm here on the stak i make them from the proper thickness coark gasket meterial and i also make the rubber seal disc gasket that goes in the bottom of the float bowl under the screw plug in the very bottom of the float bowli can also tell you what inlet needle you can use as a replacement. if you coat the float let it dry for 7 to 10 days after the last coat you apply this gives the sealer time to get totally cured. hope this helps

halfway down on the right column. Here's his online catalog link
http://www.enginads.com/pedersen/index.html

Pay attention to the process Coyote gave for sealing it. The float is really subject to being attacked by the alco gas we get today.

Thanks Coyote , I think i am going to try the tecumsa float conversion someone else done here , I am going to try to buy the metal float here locally either today or tommorow and then make an adapter to make it work on my engine , It looks like the biggest down fall of this engine is the float , Wonder why no one else has made a metal or plastic replacement float for these?

dont try the float conversion i tryed it and could not get it to work right. its not worth wreacking a good military float to try somthing that most likly wont work. if you wreack the float you will have to buy a new carb at 75.00 and up . i would just coat the float you have.

Surplus only, Military switch to the Tactical Quiet series in the late 1990's.
Even with sealed float i shut off the gas and let the engine suck the carb dry just in case.
Do not idle the engine, it will burn out the voltage regulator, not a cheap fix.
Best way to set the engine speed is with a optical revcounter, the twin cylinder engine has two separate ignition system so a digi counter would read at double speed, 7200 rpm.
A picture of the set would be nice.

Please do, yours is 1957, few years older then mines which is 1960.
Continental motor corp was contracted to Mfg the military standard engines series for the military in 1952, yours is six years after the initial contract and the engine is built by the new special division exclusively for military air cooled portable electric and utility power. It predates the MEP models and is right after the PE models.
Mines is the SG model and is only 120V AC with L-1 and L-2 terminals, no 240V AC like the later MEP models had.
The fuel tank on my SG 1500 has been ''updated'' to the stainless steel MEP fuel tank, the old tank was of regular steel of the same size of the stainless one only on it's side strapped to the mounting plate with a gas level indicator from a Ford model-T ( i ran the numbers, it matches 1928-1930 fuel tank), regrettably the fuel/gas tank could not be saved but the top of the tank along with the filler neck, fuel cap and fittings was saved until i can have a new fuel tank made up and all the original components soldered in.

If more help is needed with the carb. coyote62ny knows just about all the tricks and hints needed.
