Default Older kohler gen runs rich

I have a 4.0 BF - 3CR/16004B generator that came out of a motor home. I think it is mid 79s. I had it running well although you had to always "play"with it to get it started. Now it may start but runs like crap, popping and banging and seeming to run rich. What should the settings be on the two needles at the base if the carb, anyone know? Anything else I should be looking for?

That's an Onan generator, not a Kohler. If you post the serial number, we can give you the date it was made.

You might consider moving this post to the Onan forum for a better response.

To answer your question, the initial adjustment for both the idle and main needles is 1 1/4 turns open.

You might also check the float level, 5/16" +-1/32", and the choke adjustment.

Kohler makes a fine genset, on par with, and in some cases, especially with the new stuff, of a better quality than Onan.

Popping noise? Look to the ignition system. The correct spark plugs? Correctly gapped? Ignition timing right? Points in good condition? Gapped right? Choke opening when warm? Then look to carburation.

Thanks all. Driving me crazy as it will run nice and smooth for hours or sometimes only minutes the way it should and then just start banging and popping and smelling rich. Put in new plugs, seemed to be good spark. Anyone know the correct gap? Guess I'll play a little more and see what I can do.

Thanks again.
