Default Wiring help with a stamford generator.

I have a stamford generator that is on a 3 cyl lister diesel and I need some help with the wiring. I have it all figured out except for 4 small wires coming out of the box in there own wire loom, two wires run to the stator housing for what I assume is the excitation part ( I have this off the change the bearing its getting squeaky) and the other two wires are tied into the black and red main wire's that exit the generator.

I'm new to the whole generator and electrical thing I never did really get into it until now, I'm used to 12 and 24 volt automotive electrical , so bear with me on this one I dont really know the proper names of stuff.

here is the tag.

this is the 4 wires and in the background is the housing that 2 of the wires run to

In my hand are the other two wires that run into the main power wire's.

Thanks for any help in advance!

Looks like voltage sensing leads. I should have a manual on that unit.

They are voltage sensing leads. If you trace them back, you will see they go to the regulator.

The Cummins Generator Technologies site has data and diagrams for nearly everything that Stamford made. Worth a look. Combustor.

I looked on cummins site and no luck, mines not listed to old I guess.

powerguy628, If you read my post I did trace them back, two go to the housing I have removed to change the bearing in the second picture, and the other 20 go to the red and black main wires coming out of the generator, unless that black square in picture 3 is a voltage regulator it doesn't have one becasue that's all that's in the box other then the battery charger.

when I get the new bearing , hopefully tomorrow , I will bolt it to the lister and see if it makes power without them wires hooked up to anything. If it does great they will be cut off, if not I will be calling cummins I guess.

Here's a site with lots of links that might help.

My son and I both have newer Stamford/Newage units from light towers and they use transformers for regulation.
Is there a chart inside the top cover?

the 2 wires going to the field coils (exciter) are named X AND XX (f+,f-); other 2 are
240 volts ac voltage sensing and power ,all 4 going (plugging) to a sx 460 voltage
regulator ,which was remote mounted by someone before.
You can use a replacement avr; output of 2.5 or 3 amperes at 62.5 volts is enough.

moteurdelco Thanks for the info! I was wondering if I would hurt anything by running say 24V into the exciter wires while its running to see if it produces any power. that way I know the generator is good before I fork out the cash for an avr.

try 12 volts before,it wll be enough with no load. adding load, you need to increase excitation also,to maintain ac output. reading the nameplate, maximum vdc at full load
should not exceed 40 vdc of excitation. if more, there is a problem .

I'll try 12 volts then, is DC alright or should I try and find a source of AC power?
