Default Maytag Washing Machine Questions

Hi Everyone,

I have a few questions about my maytag washing machine. The machine is a square tub, that i believe to be a model 30. I believe the machine I have was origionaly powered by an electric motor. I still have the motor too, it is a GE and is mounted on what I believe to be an origional board with origional hardware. But I am changing this washer to gasoline power so that I can take it to shows and have some fun. . . Anyway, my bigest question is the drive pullys. The origional electric motor is fitted with a flat belt pulley as is the washing machine. Did maytag engines ever run flat belts or do I need to find a v-belt drive pulley for the washer? My other question concerns the drain hose for the washer tank. It is my assumption that the ends on the hose were permanently bonded to the hose from the factory. If anyone has an origional drain hose with both ends on it, or a v belt pulley for my washing machine please contact me. One last question. I can not find any way to lube the large gear box on the side of the machine that runs the ringers. Were these pre greased from the factory and that is all they get or what?

Thanks,

Joe

I have never seen a Maytag with a flat belt, but maybe there were a few, but I don't think so. You can try Bob' small engine repair in IOWA. I DON'T know if he is a sponsor on this sight. There are sponsors on this site that might be able to help, if there are some try them first. As for the washers, I don't know about them try the MAYTAG collectors club www.maytagclub.com I think..........CHUCK

There was a model 92 long frame on e-bay the other week with a flat belt pulley.

Joe, I think you probably have a model 80 washer. These were made in the 20's and used a flat belt drive. You could put a model 82 engine on it but you will need the starting mechanism which mounts on the washer. You can also use a long base 92 engine with a flat belt pulley. You can also use a long base twin engine, but I think you would probably have to change the pulley on the washer to a v pulley. The picture is a model 82 washer showing the engine and starting mechanism. Hope this helps! Tom

Hi Guys,

Thank you for the help so far. I think Tom is correct in saying that I have a model 80 washer. I have a maytag 92 long base, but i need a flat belt pulley. I even have the origional belt. If anyone has a flat belt maytag engine pulley for me or a drain hose please let me know. Once again, how do I lube the gear box that runs the ringers?

Thanks,

Joe

Does anyone know of a source for the spout that goes on a Maytag drain hose? Tony

Tony: I don't know where you are located, but here in Minnesota we have a Appliance Parts Co called DEY Appliance. They have lots of Maytag Machine Parts, The hose and spout being one of them. You may want to check out a parts store in your area.

It's nice to see young guys getting into this old stuff collecting/restoring. If you spell wringer without a "W" you are way younger than most of us. Ha Ha. Happy new year! Steve

Joe;

I don't know if any one answered your question about grease in the "wringer" head, but they could be greased. Here is a picture of a can of grease sold by Maytag. It says: "lubricant for wringer head" and "power unit grease".

I have several washing machines and I even washed shop towels several years with an old square tub model. I never put any grease in it, and it didn't "complain". I just looked at one and I suppose you would have to take the top off to get the grease in.

Good luck with the whole project.
