Default Onan 3.6kyfa26120g 3600rpm

Trying to find a suiteable generator for our hunting shack. Wondering the good, the bad on the Onan model 3.6kyfa26120g s/n e973693877. It is 3600rpm rv generator that runs on propane. We have decided to go propane, maybe diesel for our fuel source. I would like something reliable and still able to find parts for.

Other than being 3600 RPM, it is probably a pretty decent unit. It was built in 5/97. Parts should be easy to come by. From posts here, it seems the starter drive gear & carburetor, are the weak links in the KY units. Running on propane would eliminate most of the carb. troubles. These units have a small oil sump, so there is not much leeway on the oil, check it often & keep it full. I have a KY in my horse trailer & sometimes run it 24 hrs a day for a few days. I shut it down & check oil at least every 12 hours. Electronic engine control boards & most likely electronic voltage regulation. Do not shut it down or run out of fuel while under load, it can get very expensive.

Most of us here at The Stack are fans of the older units, pre 1980, & 1800 RPM. But they come with their own set of quirks.

The Do not shut it down or run out of fuel while under load issue is AC voltage regulator likes to die. On older model gens like Emerald gen that have separate regulator, it's ~$200 - 300 for a new one (flight systems). On yours I think they combined the control board and reg in one more expensive ($800+??) potted board. Keep the slip rings clean or that can kill it too, I think.

Oil ...I think that is the one with no oil pressure or level safty, and it only holds 1qt of oil. Some people with a seized engine say but it was only down a quart of oil (50%).

Just got home from a day at the cabin. It was about 28 degrees out and my Kohler powered rv generator (propane fuel) was very hard to get running, it required a shot or two of starting fluid but once running ran great. Plugs and points are new, the stock air intake is missing and it now has a universal air filter, maybe that is a problem? We need something that starts better in the cold weather. I am not to sure what we should be looking for? Thanks for the replies as I need all the advice I can get on various generators.

It could be your Kohler would benefit from a “tune up”. Even the good old Onans will cause you to pull your hair when not tuned properly. At 28 degrees, a good 5-30 weight oil may help cold starts. A propane fuel system with a demand regulator presents another source of troubles, are all the fuel system components functioning correctly? Vacuum leaks or regulator vents blocked can make for poor operation of the regulator.

Oil is 10w-30w Amsoil synthetic, plugs and points are good. I have never tested the fuel system components. This generator will probably end up a backup as finding parts for it is getting difficult. I think I will start another thread on cold weather starting generators.
