Default Onan 4.0 BFA Rotor and Stator

I need to find the parts numbers (and the parts--new or used!) for my Onan RV generator. Model Number 4.0 BFA-1R/1600A. Ser #K843845704. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Generator was rebuilt 3 years ago at CumminsOnan for $2900, has less than 150 hours on it and they say it must have picked up a stone--completely trashed the stator and rotor.

Your model and serial numbers indicate you have a spec A, 120 volt only BFA built in November of 1984.

Rotor part # 520-0732
Stator part # 220-1823

If you post or PM an email address capable of accepting large attachments, we can send you the service and parts manuals.

If the rotor and stator are truly damaged - and I DO NOT trust Cummins on this, the generator is BER, Beyond Economic Repair. Get the service manual and we can help you troubleshoot it.

Keep an eye on Craigslist. The BFA's are showing up quite often from older 1980's motor homes being parted out. You can easily pick one up for $500 or less. You can most likely pick up another BFA for less than $200 in running condition. That's Craigslist, NOT eBay

I listed a few Onan generators nearby to you on the Onan Craigslist forum here.

Or maybe they left a bolt loose. Be very hard for it to pick up a stone. I agree with Kevin. I don't have any faith in Onan techs of today.Get the manual and check it out yourself. Not that hard to do.Just post an email address some one will send one to you. Best of all it's free.

As Billy reels in another acolyte

Wow: They charge you $2900 to do what???
You must have a couple of new plugs, oil & filter,
and a completely new coat of green spray paint.

In case you can't tell Cummins is not thought highly of around here.

Kevin--thanks for the quick reply. I've got the generator torn down, and the stator and rotor are in shreds--broken copper wires hanging loose, broken plastic chunks, etc.--definitley trashed. So I guess I'm going to start looking for a replacement/parts unit. My email is hog65@aol.com if you wouldn't mind sending the manual. I'm surprised the unit was built '84--it came out of a '96 Tioga and the guy I bought the RV from said it was the original generator. Duh--guess he didn't tell the whole truth and nothing but.

Ed--lucky for me the guy I bought the RV from had paid Cummins the $2900--and yes, it has a very lovely green paint job--and a really trashed rotor and stator. Cummins denies responsibility. Of course.

The manuals should be in your mailbox.

my guess would be the end bearing let go or the center through bolt wasn't tight and let things move, causing the rotor to trash everything.

Look at the rear bearing plate. Make sure all the bolts are there. Rear bearing failure can also cause the damage. Can you post some pictures. Sure isn't the original one to the RV. I don't think the BFA was still in production in 1996. I know the spec A wasn't

It's on a pallet in the back of my van right now. When I dig it out I'll get some pics to post. Thanks. I wonder what other models would fit in the generator compartment on the 96 if I start looking around for a replacement? How would I figure out which Onan models would be compatible?

There are lots of BFA units around, you can probably find another one. The BF units were very similar in size & arrangement. The NHE & older Emerald series units are often a little higher rated output, but about the same size as the lower kw BFAs.

The main thing is do not get in a big hurry, you should be able to find a nice BFA or NHE for $500 or less. Many of us have bought these units in the $100 - $200 range. http://kansascity.craigslist.org/rvs/3620224588.html
