Default Kohler 30RZ with Ford LSG-4231 Timing

Hello all, I've searched till I'm blue in the face, Kohler themselves can't find the info, I'm looking for the ignition timing specs for Nat gas and Propane for a 30RZ with the Ford 2.3 LSG-4231 turbocharged engine. I forgot the rest of the numbers off the unit and engine at the shop and will post those later, any help would be awesome, thank you !

I would think those would be available from any Ford Industrial Engine Distributer, or directly from Ford, as they are an Engine spec, NOT a Genend spec.

Also possible to derive the best timing and mixture for your situation by tuning it under load.

It does take a nearly full load of even better a full load to get good response, but if you move the timing or mixture the right way, the governor will respond by closing the throttle a tiny bit to keep rpm from rising. Go the wrong way and it will open the throttle slightly. You can simply watch the governor linkage or you can install a manifold vacuum gauge and watch that, looking for highest vacuum.

Does this even have a distributor? A lot of fords went to coil packs, the timing is not adjustable. Sensor is bolted in place and can't be moved....

With DIS it's 9 +/-1 degree at 750RPM, non adjustible, if this has a distributor let me know, i've got something on that too

This should be a LSG-423, i thin the 1 is actually an L, as in 4 cyl 2.3 liter

Yes it is a 4 cyl 2.3 turobcharged. I did call my ford industrial distributor, and 2 others, no one had anything on it other than gasoline. I got a call into their distributor. Kohler corporate researched and came up with 20 deg for the pointless distributor, ran it, not enough advance, so I set it by watching the throttle arm, yes I had under full load with a load bank, seems to like 30 deg. I work on gens everyday, mostly diesel, Ford's are by far the hardest to find specs for nat/lp It seems, Thanks for the help still looking for the factory spec I guess.

Default Kohler 30RZ with Ford LSG-4231 Timing

As per Kohler Bulletin SB-575 :
LSG-423 Turbocharged timing is 20 degrees BTDC (Advanced) on L/P ONLY!!
Just a footnote: They never produced a N/G 30Kw w/ a 423 turbo...they went to the 649 if it was gonna be 30Kw on N/G.

Attached is the actual bulletin for further reference.
Keep in mind that L/P makes more HP, that's why Kohler couldn't get the 30Kw from N/G in the LSG-423.

That's exactly what I was looking for! Thanks a million. This thing was on natural when I got it, It will be Lp vapor when relocated. I load banked it on Natural and now I see why it wasn't rated. It runs out of Hp around 25 KW. Anyway, thanks again!

Hi Generatorman,

My 30RZ282 says 30KW N/G and is also the turbo LSG 423. When you say not produced in 30KW is that because its 3 phase? Just for general knowledge since It's all I need for my house. Thanks for the info nice to have if needed and in my files!!

Natural gas doesn't produce as much power per cu ft so the engine will run out of power.
