Some people swear by the Stens aftermarket parts, but I do not. Alot of the Stens parts are made in China and India where as genuine Kohler parts are exclusively made in the USA. I recently rebuilt a K301A. I had the cylinder bored 0.010" over, shaved the head, had new valve guides installed, fitted new valves, valve seats, re-gasketed and re-sealed the engine with a new piston, and rings for right around $550. The engine starts easy and runs like a top, just the way it should! My K301A is mounted on a Cub Cadet 125, and with this past winters snowstorm it made that money back in a few short hours. I always use Genuine parts whenever they are available, but that is the way I am. I do not believe in small engine aftermarket parts. I honestly do not think they are made to the same standards regardless of what the people who state that Stens parts come from the same factory!

I have 150 hours on my K321 rebuild on my Case 444 that is used for mowing and snowblowing. The kits from ebay seem just fine to me. $100 for the rebuild kit, $100 to bore the cylinder and turn the crank. So for $250 and my labor I had a rebuilt engine.

I have used the parts from NAPA. I refuse to pay over $200 for a piston and rings from Kohler!! That is plain robbery! I think NAPA parts are guaranteed for 2 years.

I rebuilt the K301 in my Wheel Horse using the $100 ebay kit that came with piston, con rod, valves, gaskets, and seals. I've got about 200hrs on it now, and so far so good. It never burns oil, and runs great, but only time will tell. Here is a pic of what it looked like after rebuild, although I don't recommend making a worker this pretty as its hard watching them go downhill, as it doesn't look this good anymore. Thanks

Aftermarket kit is great, bu tspecify the BBT brand connecting rod. Very high quality and machined very precise.

If you have a real nice tractor, the style D mahle piston only avail thru kohler, with its matching rod is the way to go. They never burn oil and they will not loosen up as fast as the style A piston.

However the price of the ebay kit is a no brainer for a decent rebuild.

Nice looking tractor. I usually do the same thing. I make them look as good or better than new and then start using them. No different than buying a new garden tractor and using it.

The interesting thing is when you take them to a show after about 5 or 6 years of hard use, the "nice restoration" becomes "wow, that is a nice looking original tractor". I guess that isn't so bad.
