Default eBay Scam Attempts

Just received another email purporting to be from Safeharbor Department, eBay Inc. indicating one or more attempts were made to log into my eBay account from a foreign IP address. Requests you to click on a link and fill out a form to verify your identity. Indicated if request is ignored your account will be temporary suspended. Also advises that 72 hours be allowed to investigate the case and not to make any changes to the account in that time. Yeah right, three days to make use of your account info if you were to send it in. Email also goes on with some legal jargon to make the it look legitimate.

Another one for the "Delete" button.

When you get these, before you delete them please forward them to "spoof@ebay.com". Ebay actively pursues these frauds.

Outside of the nice thank-you ebay emails you for reporting the suspicious letter, do you have ANY evidence that they've actually tracked down, and had charges filed against ONE SINGLE PERPETRATOR?

I am not trying to start an argument here, and maybe you have access to more information on this subject than I do, but I have never heard of a single prosecution for these "phishing" schemes. I hope I'm wrong here, and people are being punished for this but I wonder? Sure, there is a report to their ISP, and the server is soon shut down, but I'll bet most of the scammers are soon back at it!

IN RESPONSE TO BOB. I AM OF THE SAME OPINION. I HAVE BEEN GETTING THESE THINGS FROM E-BAY, AND ALSO PAYPAL, AND AT FIRST THEY LOOK LEGITIMATE UNTIL YOU EXAMINE IT CLOSELY. BUT ON REPORTING THESE TO SPOOF AT EBAY.COM, I HAVE NOT SEEN ANY RESULTS FROM REPORTING AS FAR AS ACTION TAKEN TO STOP THESE HACKERS, JUST A NICE THANK YOU FOR REPORTING THE EMAIL. I THINK, THAT WITH TODAYS MODERN TECHNOLOGY CERTAINLY EBAY COULD PUT THE BRAKES ON THIS SORT OF THING. I FEEL IT SHOULD STILL BE REPORTED,BUT I WOULD LIKE TO SEE AN END TO IT. CLIFF

"Knoxville man charged with eBay scam" this was a headline in the Knoxville News Sentinel on 3/6/04. He got a large fine and jail time.

In that ebay fraud case in the paper, was he charged with what we are discussing here..."phishing" (Attempted identity theft), or some other fraud, such as not delivering items "won" and paid for from his auctions?

I have yet to see news of anyone charged with the identity theft thing assosciated with ebay.

Took Patrick's suggestion and forwarded the spoof email to ebay as it was still in my deleted folder. Hope they can still trace the origion or does deleting the email before forwarding it have an effect on that process?
