Default Fairbanks Morse Z plugoscillator timing

I'm finishing up a 3hp 1917 Fairbanks Morse Z getting ready for a first startup. Hope someone out there can help me with timing the trip on the plugoscillator. Right now it trips at about 20 degrees before TDC, or as FM would call it inner dead center. Is this close? Can't find any info on any site or discussion. Any help would be appreciated.

Pumpkin,

If you can, I would really like to see a video of the 3HP running. Even pics would be great. I have a 1919 model.

Thank you,
Jeff

Jeff, I'm working on cleaning up the cart. Really rusty, going to paint it. The engine has some original paint so I'm keeping that as is. As soon as the project is finished I'll post a video or pictures. Thanks for the interest.

Looks like it originally had a rotary Sumpter low tension mag and ignitor instead of a PLUGOSCILATOR & trip mag. Are you running it with a battery and coil?

The mag was in the hopper, along with the gear guard. I rebuilt the Sumter magneto myself, and it works great! The starting crank was even there with it. Technically this isn't a "Plugoscillator" because of the gear driven mag, however it is the "plug in ignitor type" This engine is a 1916.

It's amazing that the mag base hadn't rotted away like most do. You're lucky!~

Mike,

Thank you for sharing the video! It is great to see an old engine operating on its magneto.

Kind regards,
Jeff9
