Question Bolens RIDE-a-matic

I have just purchased a 1957 through 1959 Bolens RIDE-a-matic from a friend of mine. He told me it is a 1956. He could be right, I just ain't sure about that. Anyway, I am wordering what kind of horsepower it has. It has a Kohler engine and I think its a K90 engine from what I have found out looking around. it has a plate on the engine cover, but is unreadable. Any information would be helpful.

Is there any other engine options available in a kohler that could be mistaken for a k90? The tag on the flywheel cover has the numbers, 11 426516, and below that, 28118E. That is all I can read off that. The tag on the tractor reads, type 232-01 and below that, 231-01. The serial number is 41047. Is also has electric start.

Do you know what the difference is between a RIDE-a-matic and a Deluxe RIDE-a-matic? Is it the electric starter option?

I don't know a damn thing about them. But here's some official
1958 sales literature, just might shed some light on the tractor you have.

Others have already provided some correct info.

Your Bolens tractor is a 1960 model. ...The engine was a 7hp Kohler model K161 with Spec number 28118E.

The model 231-01 was equipped with diamond-tread tires.
The model 232-01 was equipped with agricultural-tread (AG) tires.

The two models were the same otherwise.

The 12-volt electric starter kit was Bolens #23838, and was optional on those model tractors.

There was a large market for these little Garden tractors and their accessories then and any builder interested in that market really came up with some nice attachments. I remember we all had big gardens then as folks only went shopping for groceries they couldn't grow them selves. Everyone, aka us kids, worked all summer and fall weeding the family garden. Our garden was always a couple acres minimum, it supported us and the cousins as well. My uncle always had some kind of walk behind cultivating unit he would bring out to speed up the process. Mostly David Bradley, never saw the Bolens line until recently but it looks well thought out. Might be interesting to see if one could find the full set as advertised. F.J.W.
