Default Simplicity Engines

Does anyone know how to identify the year of manufacture for a Simplicity engine? We have a serial number, but haven't been able to find much of anything that gives this kind of information about the Simplicity.
Also, the valve detente on this is broken and we don't know what it looks like. I'm talking about the piece that goes between the valves on the head. Does anyone have a picture of this?

Try posting on the antique engine forum. More engine folks will see it. Bill K
