J.D. 3hp. trouble!

Three days ago, bottem of gas tank started leaking, I cut about 2ins.off the bottem welded plate on,sealed it, every thing was good. Also took oil pan off and made new gasket out of thin cork, like what was on there. Guess what, it leaks! Crankcase pressure blows gas out the filler plug. How do you guys seal these things! Let me give a try to your answer. If you use the cork, get a tube of the blue gasket compound and use it on both sides of the gasket. I find that is the best stuff to seal.

I don't know if you can seal them .. gov plate cover leave out top bolts or I think they blow oil out of mains ... later Models had breather on crank cover ...Byron

although cork was originally used i have found that 1/32 paper works better. i generaly use aircraft hi-tack as a gasket sealer. silicone is not very good with gas as it will sometimes turn it into snot. put a gasket on top and bottom of the pan. sometimes after the pan has been disturbed we have had to drill and tap a hole in the flange surrounding the filler areas. by putting a screw at these points it will stabalize the center of the pan, eliminate vibration, and provide a tight seal in these areas. it sounds like the problem is in this area since air is being forced into the gas tank. hope some of this helps

Mr. Falk, It think your right, I used the high taik cement and the cork gasket like the orgenial. Thought if that was good enough for the old timers, it would work for me. Mabey they used a shelac for sealer? I was very suprised to find there was no gasket between gas tank and oil pan. I've ran this engine for meany hours with no leaks. I do'nt think it's ever been takin apart till now. It is a 1946 model. Thanks for all the help guys. And thanks agin Harry! D. Smith
