I have acquired a John Deere Model L or LA tractor that needs engine work. What is the difference between a Model L or LA and how do I find what model it really is? Thanks in advance.

Just for starters the L has hollow frame tubes and the LA has solid. The wheels are different. The LA has a big cast center with the rim bolted to it and the L is a pressed wheel more like a standard automobile wheel. Also the L has I believe 22 inch tires on the rear and the LA has 24 inch ones. There are thing like the seat is different but I believe this should be enough info so you can determine what you have.
