Default Painting raised letters

What is the best way to paint raised letters on engines that have been cast into it? Like on some John Deeres, Monitors, etc?

Is the right way to tape the letters, cut the tape off the tops, and then paint? Is there an easier way?

Thanks for any and all help.

I use a hard plastic roller dipped in the color I want, and roll it over the tops of the letters That way you don't even have to mask them. Pour some paint on a spounge and let it get almost dry. Roll the roller across the sponge, and then across the letters and it won't drip and run. Try it on a scrap piece first, because some paints dry quicker than others. Like Harry says, "Your mileage may vary".

I use a small foam brush. Put color on it, then wipe it in a paper towel and then just wipe it (the foam brush) across the raised letters.

I have used a very good artist sable brush and carefully paint the raised letters. I clean the brush right away with lacquer thinner.

It worked for me but I'm Vveery steady.
