Default Fairbanks Color?

Anyone know what is considered to be the correct color of green for the 1-1/2 hp "Z" Fairbanks Morse throttle governed engine? Do you have paint numbers?

Was there any differance in color between the US engines and the Canadian ones?

Also how do most of you guys paint your engines, spray or brush?

Regards Bill

Wendel's Notebook gives DuPont 72001 as the correct green for the Z. I spray my engines.

Bill,

I lack the equipment and room to spray gun my engines, so i use rattle cans of Rustoleum. Dark Hunter Green is very very close to the Dupont colors. Make sure you get the Dark Hunter Green and not just Hunter Green, there is a big difference.

I painted my 6hp Z 3 years ago and it has held up very nicely, even when i slop gas and splash oil and grease all over it. Good preperation is the key.

Ken

I agree with Ken. Prior to spraying I also clean the parts/block with kerosene to clean, let dry and prime with rustoleum rust primer. In addition, after adding decals I spray a very light coat of Krylon clear coat from a spray can over the decal and maybe a few inches beyond it to preserve the decal. Don't mask around the decal or a fine paint line will form where the tape ends. Good luck.

Rob,

I have never considered using a brush before. Do you do a lot of thin coats? How do you keep brush marks out and get a nice finish?

I had a truck once that was painted with a brush, it was as ugly as a dog's breakfast. One should never buy a used vehicle at night after it rains, every paint job looks shinny and new in those conditions.

Cast iron and sheetmetal are two dogs of a very different color.

Hi,2 to 3 coats mostly 2 will do it.I like to use dupont centari. It brushes well in colder temperatures. If it's too hot it dries on the brush too fast.I painted one engine when the temp was 40 degrees out and I got wonderful results.the centari didn't dry too fast.there will be brush marks but that is like the original paint jobs on most engines. My original 1926 6 hp m has all kinds of brush lines and missed spots from the factory. You have to use a really good quality brush or you will have a few bristles in your paint. Also use a new one for each engine as you never can get it really clean.I go all in 1 direction usaully with the long way of the part.no matter what you do it will still look brushed though.I like the way it looks.I don't do the sheet metal with a brush I will set up a spray gun for that but there isn't much sheet metal on an engine.Centari usaully flows out pretty smooth.surface prep has a lot to do with it.The factories used to fill their castings and sand smooth that makes a difference.I also take a griner/sander to the castings to smooth them up the clean with acetone prime with a spray can then brush.Happy Painting Rob
