I have several wooden farm implements and an engine skid with original paint, lettering and pinstripes. I would like to know the best way to preserve and enhance these old finishes. I have heard that linseed oil will turn dark with time and remain sticky. What would you recommend?

Wash carefully with soap and water . Let dry . Apply a good quality paste wax , as per instructions on can . This is the best method and is fully reversable . Doug.

When you say "paste wax" are you talking about the same stuff that you put on cars?

CJ: It's probably a floor paste wax that comes in a can. I have a can of it someplace Me, I usually use "BOILED" Linseed oil(unboiled linseed oil never dries) cut about 50% with mineral sprits. Just brush it on, and let it dry. Sometimes it takes 2-3 coats, but it looks nice Paul

Very good question. I asked the same to a very knowledgable person, Dr. John Wilcox (This is the guy who actualy restored the Otto-Langen at Kinzers, PA) and he swears by automatic transmission fluid. If it is good enough for John, it is good enough for me
