Default Paint pen followup

This is the results of my first try at striping. I used a motor to turn the flywheels. 1 1/2 to 8 inch and 1 1/2 to rim. This was still a little fast, I think about 3 or 4 inches per second might work well.

We havn't mastered this new camera yet, waited for cloudy day and still got glare from the new paint. Could use some help here.

Thanks, Ralph in NC

You sure did a nice job. Better watch out, 'cause you are now in demand. It looks like the pens do a good job. I have always used the stripper with the little wheel. Not alway a good job was done. Dick in the cooooold Finger Lakes Region of NY.

Very fine job Ralph. Next step is to write an article about your pin striping procedure.

Ralph, that really looks sharp! Now, what kind of paint pen did you finally decide to use, and can you give us some pointers on how you did it? What kind of paint did you use on the engine itself? Thanks & stay warm, Al in cold NYS

I'm using Painters brand, water base from Wallyworld. Didn't find oilbase til to late. Laid the block on it's side and used straight edge for the straight lines.

For the curve, used a lengh of wire with a loop in one end for the pen and a 90% bend stuck in a hole. I clamped a piece of sheet metal across 2 studs and located the hole.

I set the flywheels in place and adjusted the shims. Belted up elec motor to turn very slow. The pen speed should be about 3 inches per second. Diameter of stripes in inches will be about same as no of seconds in one rev. Rested my hand on a support and held the pen freehanded.

I'm a little reluctant to divulge my secret engine paint but with all these nice responces I will tell you. It's Rustoleum Regal Red, 2 coates brushed on. Love this site Harry, Ralph in NC

I was restoring this Jaeger along with the Economy. Glenn Karch suggested taping the pen to a piece of wire wrapped around crank shaft to stripe flywheels.

Following his advice, I made this rig for the Jaeger. It is adjustable for different radii. Need to use care when stop and restart to maintain smooth line. Much easier to use than motor drive. Have your solvent rag ready, if you dont like it you can wipe it off, Ralph in NC
