I've acquired (by accident) some raw Linseed oil! Can it be used as is on wood or can it be boiled (is that dangerous) to get the better product? Thanks Vic

Vic, Don't use it raw ... it will never dry. Don't know about boiling it.

Vic, "Boiled" linseed is not actually boiled with heat as you might think. It is a chemical process that changes the oil so that it dries more readily. Do NOT attempt heating it...you'll end up with a gooey mess...if it doesn't explode first! Check on the internet for info under oil based paints. Best, George

Raw linseed oil can be converted to "boiled" Linseed oil by adding a "Japaning" (it is still available). The available Japaning contains "Phoenix Salts" that will cause/allow the raw linseed oil to polymerize and harden.
A good thing to add too if you thin the boiled linseed oil with mineral spirits, or other solvents. |
