Default Soule Steam Engines

Would like any information on the Soule Steam Feed Works Meridian, Miss. I have two of these and they are both twin cylinders with no flywheel, there is a part no. T 5 on the side. They were used to run a sawmill to make boxes in 1970.

Hi Frank: These were mainly used to run the carriage feed on large sawmills. I heard a while back the company was still in business. Why not contact them and see what they can tell you?

Soule no longer builds the twin cylinder steam engine. I bought the last new one they had back around 1992. Cost was a little over $5,000.00. I talked to Bob Soule , and he said they quit making them because the last man that knew how to assemble one had retired, and that they used up their spare parts stock to build the last engines. I was surprised to see the engine was painted a medium blue.

Soule has been bought out, and now does custom machine work and casting. They may still have the old patterns, and could perhaps quote a price.

Here is their website address:

I e-mailed them asking a couple of questions about my engine and never got any response. I know they were also very popular as hoist engines, especially along southern fishing docks. They were tremendously powerfull, and have a very smooth reversing action. Several have been used as power sources for traction engine rebuilds with good results.

sweet. that is what i am going to do with mine... first run my buzz saw, then my ripping saw (manual carriage feed) -- then the babcock and wilcox style water toob boiler and the soule are going to go mobile as a very cool traction engine. my boiler is custom 126 sq ft, 4 ft grate, 120 psi WSP, wood fired, 56 gal -- but i am not steamed up yet! soon.... dec 15th 2009...
