How about "the great locomotive chase", done in the late 50's or 60's? Also, in 'murder on the orient express", there are a couple of pacing shots showing some good valve motion.

I have seen alot of them in the John Wayne western's. The good ones too, like in the 1870's and 1880's. Weather their real or Hollywood, I dont know, but they look real.

Yep, they're real alright. Beautiful engines like the INYO have been lovingly restored and used in several movies. They are still alive and well and can be seen in western museums.

There is a scene with a traction engine on a threshing machine at the beginning of The Green Mile.

Your local library should be able to get you "In Danger's Light". It was made in 1930 and is a dandy. If you want to see lots of steam locomotives, actual round house scenes, steam hooks working, steam locomotive's running scenes with actual exhaust and whistles[not dubbed in ones], and hear old time railroad language/terms, then get this movie.

Try the Buster Keaton silent movie. Was it 'The Great Locomotive Chase' or 'The General'? Also look up material on the Virginia &Truckee Railroad. In the 1930's it served as the source of many of the locomotives and cars seen in almost every western made. The equipment was left over from the mining boom days of the 1800's and never rusted out or rotted in the dry desert climate. Check the link below. The Sierra Railroad was another that even made it into the days of TV.
