Default Info wtd: Steam valve clearance

I am rebuilding a Sturtevant vertical 4" x 4" steamer. It has a piston type (spool-like) valve of 1.75 diameter. I intend to align hone bore and make a new valve to fit. What is desired clearance for this type of valve? Current condition feels way too sloppy to seal (several thou.)
