Looking for information on a Dynamo built by Western Engine & Dynamo Co. Milwaukee, Wis. The tag reads Dynamo # 743471 Volts 40, Speed 1900, and Amperes 20. Need to find diagram on the switchboard. How can I use this to power some lighting? Thanks, Joe Fidd

My books don't list your generating unit but it was surely used to charge a 32 volt battery. My Delco generators charge from 38 to 40 volts. The engine speed is higher than Delco but if the generator was wound for that speed it works just fine. Delco's run around 1200 to 1350 rpm. The unit should have a start switch on it some place and the 32 volt battery was normally used to run back through the generator and opperate as a starter. Some of those units had a air/gas mixing valve permanently fixed to run the engine at the opperating speed under the charging load. Most of the time if you run it without batteries attached, it will run too fast and do a little bouncing around. I would need a little more information before I could give accurate advise. If you could get me a picture I might be of some help.
