Default info on Universal genset

Would appreciate any help with any kind of info on a genset made by
Universal Motor Co in Oshkosh Wisconson
Mod 3000-A
Plant31546
GenNo14103
volts110-125 DC
FI amps 24
rpm 1450
watts cont 3000
watts inter 3750

It has a 2 cylinder water cooled engine that is crank started. It uses a Bosch mag and Schebler carb. Engine runs ok but gen doesnt put out power.
The output wiring consists of 3 heavy gauge wires and 1 lighter gauge wire(purpose unknown).
This is a DC set. I am usually working on AC sets at my job so I am somewhat lost on Dc sets.
Also the oil dipstick is missing so any info as to its proper length would be a help.
Thanks again for any help
Shawn

Default Re: info on Universal genset

Shawn,
Some early 110 V plants charged and started with a 110 volt battery set, which would make the one of the heavy wires a series winding for starting. The lighter gauge wire should be for field resistance. The other two should be arm + and -.
It will take some work with an Ohmeter to tell for sure.
Universal made a two cyl. water cooled in the twenties. See the History of the Universal Motor Co. at this extra long address.
