Default Holtzer Cabot Dynamo - Id help

Does anyone know anything about the Holtzer Cabot dyanamo in the attached picture. I picked up this beauty a few months ago in NOS condition. I am planning to hook it up to a gas engine and make electricity for some old Edison 1888 bulbs. The tag says, Manufactured by Holtzer Cabot Elec. Co., Boston Mass, Class MPD, No 8298, Winding S, Speed 1200, Volts 110, Amp. 24 - Thanks for your help, Bill

Bill, I didn't know they were still making these, could you send me an address so I can get one too? All kidding aside, I have no info, but Oh-boy, is that nice.

I'm with Gus I would like for you to send me one.

I am not familiar with the Holtzer Cabot Electric Company. I have a friend in my engine club that might know about it. I'll get in touch with him and let you know what I find out.

I haven't seen a oil catch groove in a generator base before. Some of the Delco's had one but under the engine, because they did tend to leak some oil.

From the open style frame and so on I would guess it was maybe made in the late 1800's or early 1900's. Maybe some one out there is smarter than I am on that, but it IS a beautiful piece of machinery.

My betting is you got yourself a shunt wound DC machine there. Until 1930, it was quite common for commercial buildings with their own boiler plant to also generate their own electricity. In Rochester NY, it was 1936 before the utility convinced the last customer to switch to their power. The utility had a standing offer to pay for the coal if any user could produce their own electric cheaper than the utility would sell it to them. It was 1963 when the utility was finally able to get all the DC customers to switch to AC, they did that by providing rectifiers so the DC generator plant could be shut down.

I dont know anything about your unit, but like everyone else, think its NICE! But I do have something built by the same company, that you connect 110/120 volt to one side, and it produces 32 volt on the other side. It is in storage this minute, so dont have the details off the tag. I might be wrong, about the 32 volt part, it might be 12 volt. But is is an early piece, but not as early as the one illustrated here. I will provide more info later, for some help. Bought it at an auction in wisc., and paid a fair price.

I also have a Holtzer-Cabot motor that I would like to find info about. It has a Western Electric Dynamotor tag. 45/52 VDC, 5.5A input; 120VAC, 1.4A output. 1 phase, 60hz, CBD 2730, 0.68kVA. Thanks in advance for any help.

I just logged on here. I know something about Holtzer Cabot, and should be able to help you. I couldn't get the image to open. If you can send me an image, I'll do my best.
