Default Delco 12V generator/alternator

Working on a 12V DC Alternator by Delco to hook to an old engine and hopefully keep the RV batteries topped up.

Does anyone have specs or a URL to find out the current capability of a Delco Remy 1105 553 97A Also 4175 12v Neg appears on the second line.

How fast do you have to spin these before getting useable current out, ie: 13 volts or more?

Fortunately I have a shop manual with a schematic.

Hi Harry: Eng. Damper pully about 6 in., Alt. is about 2 in. 600RPM idel X 3 = 1800 RPM at Alt. If you run it around 2000 to 2500 you will get enough amp's. That number is newer than 1979, I would guess around 60 amps. If the plug on top is 1/4 wide and 1 inch long ( 2 blade) it should have built in regulator. 2 blade square one requires regulator. they also make a one wire model, rubber plug on top without extra wires (Industerial model). They half to be run faster before they start charging. If I find your number I'll pass the rating on to you. Good luck Tom Jr. Pa.

I was working on it again today. I have no idea which vehicle or year it was on as it was a scrapper for $10. It could be written off to an education project, but since there appear to be plenty of parts available, I think it'll be a keeper. It certainly is easy to open and close it for repair work. I caught onto the toothpick trick for the brushes.

All the diodes appear to have good front to back (6 main and three exciter) and the stator and field check out. The RFI filter checks OK.

If I hook up a small 12v battery to the main post and jumper a sense line to #2 and jumper a lamp to #1, it turns freely and never jumps into action by going over 12v. The lamp does light and stays lit. One test scheme suggests a 10 ohm resistor in place of the lamp - no difference.

If I reverse connections between #1 and #2 (I've seen two conflicting schematics about which is which) then it does not turn freely because the field has been excited. I can feel the magnetic pole lobes as I turn the rotor by hand. My spinner didn't have enough power to run it up this way and it's probably just as well. I'm thinking that this is not the proper hook-up.

If you can find it's current, that would be good to know. I've already made a board mounting for it and may well have to go for one of the new single-wire regulators for it.

3875C22 is on the regulator. One cross reference I ran into took 1105553 to 10479865. I'm not up on this part number stuff.

Harry,

I think the 97A in in model# means 97 amps full load.It was that way on the older units.I can get more info if you need it. My father ran a generator-starter alternator shop for 35 years. I can get the info from the man that he sold it to.Let me know.

Light bulbs or devices similar to them have been used in older radios and electronic circuits for years as current limiters. The resistance starts out low when the lamp is first energised. Then as the lamp heats up a moment later the resistance increases. The same principle has been used in other electric devices as you describe to regulate current. I would check out the operation initially to see if it was operating correctly with a particular lamp in the circuit.
