Default More Delco questions

Hi Don thanks for the response I never knew that Delco made an engine that small (wish I had the engine instead of the stand) are there any pictures of this little engine on the web you know of? I looked in Wendel’s book but there isn’t very much at all on Delco. I got the head off and the valves lapped they are a long way in there. On the head is cast 12-31 so I think I will call that the manufacture date. On the piston it has two rings on the top and a groove in the skirt but didn’t has a ring on it. Should there be one there? On the side of the block there is a pot metal elbow, is it the breather? How does it come off? Have you ever had the crank out of one? How is the cam timed to the crank? Are there any timing marks? I have never been in to an engine where the cam runs 90 degrees to the crank Sorry for all the questions, but there will be more I’m sure Thanks Jay

Jay, sorry I miss lead you. The motor on the three leg stands are electric motors. I think they are all 32 volt, but I'm not sure. They may have made some 110 volt ones. All of the ones I have (4) are 32 volt.

There may be timing marks, but I don't use them. I start with the cam shaft set to just start opening the intake valve and insert the crank shaft with the throw just about top dead center. Then turn the crank shaft through the full four cycles to make sure the valves are opening at the right times. If it's not just right take crank out far enough to change a tooth forward or back as needed. Try it again until you get the valves working in time with crank shaft strokes.

Some Delcos had a ring on the skirt of the piston. Probably for no more than you will run it you don't really need a ring on the skirt.

That is the crank case breather. There should be two or three small set screws at the base of the breather. Take them out and carefully remove the pot metal piece. Some times they just fall apart.

Some times you just have to take your time and "think" through what needs to be done.

Good luck. "DELCO DON"
