Default It works! Thanks guys!!

I got a Novo DC generator a few months ago and just this weekend I got around to seeing if I could get the generator part to work (now that the engine runs). Cleaned the commutator and the brushes and freed up a sticky one, still no output. Then I remembered seeing a message thread on here about "flashing" the field winding to get it started after it has lost all of it's residual magnetism. Well, looking it over I decided that the third wire coming out of the gen. going to the rheostat must be the field winding. Completely guessing, while it was running, I took my battery charger and momentarity touched it from the field connection to one of the main leads coming out. I had no idea which was pos or neg as nothing is marked and no colors on any wires. As soon as I touched the charger across the wires, the light bulb attached to the output came on, and it now works like a champ every time I start it! So thanks guys for the info even though you or I didn't know I needed it at the time it was posted!

Congrats Norm, The polarity has now been set, by how you flashed the commutator. Just a couple things, would you please erase that "dreaded RED X" from the front of the machine, and PLEASE move the dern gas can! Glad to hear you got her running. Old machines do tend to come to life best in the spring when it warms up a bit.

Will definately remove the infamous "Red X"! I guess I guessed right when polarizing cause the volt meter built into the unit goes the right way!
