Default Kohler Generator Question

I recently aquired a 1953 Kohler generator with a 24 volt electrical system. Were these units positive ground or negative ground? Both cables are the same color and I don't want to fry it on the first attempted start. Thanks in advance:

Hi check the cables with a volt ohm meterto see which one is grounded. You should beable to see the one that runs to the houseing.

Have a nice day

The cable that is grounded to the frame is intuitively obvious. What I need to know is which battery cable goes to the generator frame! Thanks: largent63

Can't say for sure about yours, but every Kohler generator, or diagram that I have shows NEG. ground, with charging rate resistor going to POS.

Thanks for your responses Frank and Bill. When I got the generator from work it had been out of service for 20 some years. The batteries were long gone and there was nothing to base an educated guess on. Now I can hook it up with at least some level of confidence that I won't fry it. Thanks again:

If the battery leads still had battery clamps, the positive would be the larger diameter.
