Hey guys, First, thank you all for your very helpful info. Gus, the resistor was shorted, sending 32+ volts to the coil. I rewired my battery set (2 12v, 1 6v) so the 6v was last in series and connected the 6v poz to the coil switch(yes-not stock). i got a beautiful, consistant spark, and NO points arcing. It won't fire as long as she's turning over,(too low voltage i assume) but as soon as the start lever releases, POP goes the weasel. It charges beautiful and runs like a charm. I have a 120v 100watt bulb connected to the generator that glows under start, and also glows when generating. fairly bright when not charging the bateries. i couldn't be happier.
The points are still in dreadful condition, so if anyone has a set for sale, i'll be needing some at some point, but it seems to be fine for now. I'll set out to rebuilding the gas tank this week. If i am very successful, i will offer to redo anyone else's tank for a fair price. I have found a source of 32v lightbulbs: 75 watt/$2.49 ea 100 watt/$3.49 ea www.bulbsdirect.com (888) 757-9591 I have half dozen each on order, and will rate the supplier when they arrive. Yes, this machine likes to be under load and is much smoother charging the batteries. Thank you all so much for your much needed help. I'll send a pic as soon as i get batteries for the camera. rod |

Rod, I looked in my box of spare parts and did not find any points. I do have one set that I have set aside for my model 850 unit. I was wondering if anyone out there knows if these points were used in any automotive aplications back then? They have Delco stamped on them.

Rod, I checked the parts units, the 850 has the points still in it but the spring is broken the other two have none.

Thanks for looking bruce, i certainly don't wany your spare set. If you have spares gus and aren't likely to need these with the broked spring, they will probably be better then what i currently have. If the resistor hadn't been shorted, i might not have killed em as fast, but it's a small miricle that this is even running. The part of the points that really took the beating is the part that has the spring. Broken spring is no problem, whereas i soldered a coil spring onto the back of mine, then insulated the end of the spring that pushes off against the point case. (damn i'm good) So, if you can live without whatchya got, throw me a price including shipping. i'll let u know.

Rod, you can have 'em for whatever it cost to send. That particular plant is a "yard" ornament. Email your address. Merry Christmas. GUS
