Default Onan ID help and info

Hi, I have an older Onan genset that was given to me.It is all cast iron, very heavy unit.It is a 24 to 30 volt DC output unit that runs well. The model number is 5AJ 224E/1M.As I stated it is a dc genset rated at 1500 watts@1800 rpms so the tag says. There are two toggle switches next to the ampere gauge one is labled start and the other stop but I see no electric starter on this unit,it just has the rope pulley on the end of the crankshaft.

What could this unit be good for and can it produce 120ac voltage?? Any help on ID would be great.TIA

Joe, The number breaks down as follows: 5 is the KW output, AJ is the model, 224 is a factory code for 24/28 volt dc battery charging, E denotes electric start. The rest is more factory codes, but my list doesn't match the numbers. Uses? You can charge 2 12volt batteries in series, or you might be able to find an inverter and convert the dc output. Or you could just play with it. I would need to see the SN to determine the age, but even that might not help. I am guessing it was made mid 40s to mid 50s. Forgot to mention that it starts with the generator acting as a motor. It must be hooked up to a couple of batteries in series. The stop button shorts the ignition.
