Default Kohler Generator worth

Hello -

I'm not a collector of generators, but happened upon an ad for a 1932 Kohler 8000W generator, 4 cyl Waukesha motor that runs on propane, Magneto fired, and water cooled. The ad said it "works fine but no longer needed", and the asking price is $375. Is this a good deal, and should I consider purchasing it as in investment or for resale?

My first guess is that this generator would run at 1200 R.P.M. making it incredibly large, and heavy for its capacity. You probably wouldn't want it on a trailer to take to shows. If you want a stand-by generator for home, you coulden't ask for a finer unit. The propane carb is a plus when used for stand-by, because propane doesn't get stale like gasoline. The size and weight is a plus, because it isn't likely to be stolen, and there is allmost no vibration. The slow engine speed is a plus, because there isn't near as much wear, and you can muffle the engine to where you can hardly hear it. If you need one, or you know someone who appreciates quality, the price is right, especially if it has an automatic start system. Don't worry about the obsolete engine, it will probably still outlast most of us.

That sounds like one heck of a good price particularly if it is in running condition. So the question only becomes, "Do you want it?"

Russ -

Since I'm not a collector, no, I'm not going to pursue it. If you're interested, and within travelling distance of CT, go to www.bargainnews.com, click on "tools", type "Antique", and it will pull up the ad. I called the guy up, and he confirmed that it was "really heavy", probably 1/2 a ton, but ran well.
