Default .1 mfd Capacitor

Where can I buy .1` mfd capacitor for an old Onan genset. It looks like the capacitor that is found in many auto distributors. It is used on the AC slip rings.

Thanks

Try the link below for Digi-Key Corp. I have used them at my place of work. They are not afraid to sell small orders. The metal can is a real problem. Unless you know the value of a automotive points cap I suggest you go with a comercial version. Use a 400V or better rating for your cap.

You also may be able to buy it from Cummins/Onan. With the exception of the metal package, any .1mfd/600v capacitor will do the job.

The capacitor is used to suppress radio noise generated by minute sparking at the brush. It is not necessary for the proper functioning of the generator. This generator was probably specified to power radio equipment and was set up with the slip rings bypassed for that reason.

be sure to avoid a polarized electrolytic capacitor. A 0.1 Mf disc ceramic should do the job. Keep the capacitor leads as short as reasonably possible for ther most effectiveness in reducing radio interferance. While you can operate the unit without the capacitor and still extract electricity from it, the capicitor reduces sparking at the brushes and prolongs the life of the brush system along with the radio interferance reduction.
