I have just purchased a Kohler 10 KVA auto start plant Model 10E62. The battery voltage is 32 volts. Has any one ever used 24 or 36 volts on a 32 volt plant? If so which voltage and how did it work? Thanks, Roger

Roger;
You could use 36 volts but most of those 32 volt units work better if you use 32 volts. Most farm supply stores stock 8 volt batteries. I use two deep cycle 12 volt and one 8 volt deep cycle for my Delco-Light display trailer. Just hook them in series and you have the correct 32 volts and the deep cycle are supposed to handle the charge/discharge cycle better than the standard battery, or so I have been told. It works fine for me and I have been using the same set up for about three years now. I'm not a Kohler man but I think they were a little better generator than the Delco-Light. It should work well for you. Good luck! "DELCO DON" Southern Illinois |

Thanks for the reply. The reason for wanting to use 12 volt batteries is I have a supply of good used 12 volts that come from replacing matched sets of batteries when only one or two go bad. Roger

I tried three 12 volt batteries on my Delcolight. Three 12 volt batteries give about 39 volts. The generator was putting out about 48 / 50 volts, to much excitation I think. With two 12 volt batteries the output is about 32 / 34 volts. Whatever set up I use it still puts about 16 amps into the batteries. Make sure your batteries can take the charge current. Tony |

Roger, I've been using a 36 volt set for about 12 years or so, no adverse effects, except a few of my plants that are designed to shut down when the batteries are fully charged seem to think 36 volts is enough and do just that. If the regulator is adjustable this can be over come.

I agree with Don. It's best to use two 12s and one eight. Whatever you do, don't use a lesser voltage, because it will act kind of like a short circuit, and could overload the charging transformer, or rectifier.
I made an eight volt battery once by cutting two cells off of the end of a twelve volt battery that had a dead cell. I just hooked to the lead strap that was an internal jumper. |

Thanks to all who responded. Looking at the schematic I was sure the DC was used for sensing a load on the AC line and starting only. I just did not want to make a mistake and hurt my new toy. Gus, I think you are right,I will try to adjust the charging voltage up to charge the 36 volt batteries. Thanks, Roger
