My neighbor has a mystery engine. Looks like the 4 cylinder version of yours. Radiator's are similar. IT is OD under a oiling instruction dataplate (Non ID) so I am 99% sure its military, but we have no other idea what it is. Its a flathead V-4. Whatever it was driving was belt driven.
Any ideas of vintage or Manufacturer? ![]() ![]() ![]()

I do not know what the little V-4 water cooled engine is BUT I have a good magneto for it. I was given the mag. I thought it might have been from a 4 cylinder Olivar tractor but it is for the engine you have. From the color left on my mag, a dark green, maybe the color was a blue/green like kohler used. It is hard to tell as the color is deteriorated.
Hope you find out what you engine is so I will know what my mag fits. Kent |

I should mintion that I do not think you unit is a militarty engine because most military engines used the sealed/ shielded ignition system.

You might get some information over on the old engines section of SmokStak if you put a link to this post. I don't think you can post the pictures again, but there may be a way to get them into the second post.

Rick:
You have an Onan genset. What the model is, I have no idea. When I was in the service (many moons ago!), I had a part time job and my boss had one of those in his amusement parks' service truck. It started automatically when a load was put on it. Neat little set. Take care - Elden http://www.oldengine.org/members/durand/ Last edited by Elden DuRand; 02-25-2008 at 11:43 AM. Rick Garcia -
Looks to me like you have an Onan W2C. Look at the pair I have: ![]() I have reprints of the owners manual available. E-Mail me if interested. Kearney 99 - I have never seen a V-4 version, but it also looks like an Onan engine based on the radiator & head appearance. As K D Redd stated, it is probably not a military unit based on the igintion. That color was Onan's standard paint scheme in that era. |

The 4 cylinder unit is probably a Onan V-45-M engine on a PE-90-A Power Unit ac/dc 400Hz unit combined about 4KW.

I'd love to find one of those V-4 models - with or without the gen. It would make a nice companion for my pair of W2Cs

I have one exactly like the two cylinder shown above. Mine says Fairbanks-Morse on it but I know it's an old Onan. These are built well in that even though it says 3,000 watts I have loaded mine to 5 kw and it doesn't even sweat. When I got it,many moons ago it had a blown head. After a lot of head scratching and looking for one, my local Cummins-Onan dealer found one at the factory. It was the last one they had. Mine was a military unit and I got all info for it from their archives. BTW, these units were built around 1945-1948 according to info I got. I have the book for it if anyone needs info.

I have one that is described as a dual purpose. Produces 110 volts, 2250 watts AC and 32 volts, 700 DC. It came with the original manual. That has been reproduced and is available in the Onan Forum. Pics. and more info here.
