Default Military Generator

Hi, I first want to say I love this site, it is intresting to hear what others talk about as none of the new generation have a clue what we are talking about. I have a MEP003-A Genset It has a 4 cylinder DJC diesel air cooled engine 10 Kw 120 /220 volt single and 3 phase power. It has low hours and was in Desert Storm I bought cheap. The starter was shorted so I had one custom built for $300.00 he did not belive me it is a reverse rotation. It is missing some sheetmetal and wiring harnesses. Does anyone have or can make copies of the Field Manual and Training Manual for this unit. I made a wiring harness and got the engine to run but have not proceed any farther due to back problems. Does anyone have any experence using these in the military? would like to hear your stories. Would love to get a 10 Kw TQG Tactical Quiet Generator. Jim

Jim; Is there a NIIN number on the ID plate? Should be something like 6125-00-XXXX-XX or 6115-00-XXXX-XX. The -00- could be a -01- also.

later, RickinMt.

Bingo Jim!! Go to the below link. Under Pub No. type in TM 5-6115-585-12 and hit search. The next screen will show the publication..click on that. Notice the space between the M and 5.

I believe you'll need Acrobat Reader..not sure tho.

Good Luck..post back if ya like and I'll explain more. This is just a maintenance manual..not parts.

Better yet Jim..just type in TM 5-6115-585. This brings up 2 maintenance manuals and one parts manual.

Blabber on:-))

TM= Technical Manual (U.S. Army Pub)

5= Engineer equipment

6115= generators and converters (also 6125)

585= your specific generator

12= 1 is operator maintenance..2 is organization/unit maintenance

a 3 would be direct support maintenance 4 is general support maintenance, and 5 is depot maintenance.

The 24 is organization thru general support

The 24P is the parts manual.

I can't bring up the manuals as this damn Windows ME locks up.

Good Luck..hope yours works.

Very envious..with that baby you can power up anything within reason...even the commercial 3-phase..less expensive used stuff...and even your house.

ya done GOOD!!!

Rick, any idea where I can find 1953 era mil gen set info? I have a Onan 5 ABG and a 3 ABG gen sets and can't find any tech manuals.

Someone gave me a link to the US gov TM site but all that is there is newer stuff.

Even a list of TM manuals would be a help. I have searched many mil surplus sites with no results.

Thanks Harold

Thank You Rick... I tried that link before but I could not get it to work. I guess I wasn't doing it right but I got it to work and it is just what I needed. The first link closed down my browser also so I think it is there server. I am running a Pentium 4 3.2 Ghz.cpu Windows 2000 OS. Do you or does anybody have any ideas where I can get some sheetmetal parts for this unit. I in particular need the blower housing and the right side cover and wiring harnesses. I am sending a picture of the generator so you can see the layout of the unit. I have several diffrent Onan generators both are 4.0 kw one is a cck but this beast is my favorite unit. I love military overkill, this MEP003-A is only 10 Kw. but weighs in at 1220 pounds. I do not have the TQG but there is a sound attenuating housing for this one. I also someday will get my Hummvee. Is anybody here in California? Thanks Jim

Harold, take a look at the below site, and look at 6115-210-10. That lists an operators manual for a 3ABG..sort of. I went on line for Army manuals, but now the brower can't find the website...possibly they shut down for the weekend.

Hope this helps a little.

Just thought of something else Jim. In the parts manual (I believe it was -24P), in the left side columns is a code, probably about 5 or 6 digits. This is a manufacturers code and deals with who made the part or at least supplied it. Any National Guard facility (Supply Room) can read that code for you and let you know where they are located and all the pertinent info.

No, haven't contaced Onan. Per another board Onan is unfriendly with older stuff and all Mill stuff is built per Mil specs so no information is retained by Onan.

Here is a link to what a 3ABG loks like. My 5 ABG is pull start and runs at 3600 RPM and my 3ABG is electric start and runs at 1800 RPM

Well I have not had much luck in finding the sheetmetal parts for this generatos so untill I can find some origional parts I decided to build a replica of the origional one. Using the pictures in the Training Manual and looking at lots of pictures on the internet of DJC engines and other MEP units I came up with a design that is better then the old one. I made a mock up out of cardboard and then transfered them to a drawing. At trip to the sheetmetal shop and they cut it out on the shear. Then I just mig welded it together. I am stll in need of some of the wiring harnesses or at least the multi-pin connectors. Should be ready to start as soon as I make a stack for the exhaust. Check out the size ot the terminals where you connect for the power the split bolts are 1 1/2". Jim

Yes Jim, the split bolts seem like over kill but the military made these "handy". Sometimes distribution panels were used, or locally fabricated. With that generator, you can build one helluva distribution panel and get any flavor of sparks you want. Would you post a picture of the multi-pin connector?

Still jealous!!! RickinMt.

all i can say is WOW!!!

that is SOME HECK of a selectro switch... to carry all that amperage on a rotary switch, with that many positions.. sakes alive! whats the kw rating on this generator? i have a 12.5 kva military unit, 3 phase made by john reiner co (no info ANYWHERE on it). i basically used the gen end and the fluwheel and housing off the old engine (it was a stuck continental), to mount it to my y112. unfortunatly im stuck using a change over board, with wing nuts and copper bars, id love to have a selector like that.

im in the process of building a control panel from scratch, but i dont quite have the time to get organized about it right now...
