Default sears 1100 watt wont generate

Im working on a sears & robuck 1100 watt gen set. Motor runs good and unit was generating as recent as 6 months ago. Inside is clean and not coroded. brushes and comutator appear in good condition. Could this unit have lose its residule magnetism in this short period?, or should I be looking for another problem? model # 580.5356-1 serial # 0179237

remove the end cover and locate the brush leads. Should be marked + and -. Disconnect the leads and hook a jumper lead to each brush Start the engine and touch the jumpers to a 9VDC battery, assuring correct polarity. The motor RPM should drop. Reconnect the brush leads with the engine off. If you have to do this each time, the rotor is pooched. The residual magnetism should hold.

No, too awkward, but they could be used for a momentary charge.

A 9 volt transistor battery ought to be adequate if it is reasonably charged.
