Digging deeply into my 1960's memory, it seems that Chrysler decided that it stood for "MOtor PARts". This is clear back when the terrifying 426 hemi could be purchased right off the showroom floor for about $3000.00. I could be wrong on this as it's been a couple of years ago........(grin) George

I vote with Geaorge on the MOtor PARts, however here is an alternate:

Made Of Paper And Rags

that was probably thought up by a Ford lover whose car was Found On the Road Dead

As the former owner of a 1968 Dodge SuperBee, I always believed that it stood for Motor Parts. As for FORD, (I am also the owner of an F250 4x4) I thought I heard some one say it stood for F****d Over Rebuilt Dodge. That sounds reasonable since I first owned a Dodge and now I own a ford! FYI I believe Harry is also a MoPar fan.

Harry: Not $3000. It was actually $5200. I traded my '66 T-Bird in on a 1968 Dodge Charger R/T with the 426 Hemi.

I should have kept them both!

Harry, I think they overcharged you on accessories and beat ya badly on the tradein. 1968 Fury III cost me $2600 and change delivered to spec with a 318 under the hood. Between the time I ordered it and the day it was delivered, Lyndon decided he needed my help in Asia, so my Old Man broke the car in for me when it arrived. I still have the Fury, but I don't drive it at 140 and above any more.

It is my understanding that AC was the gentlemans initials who developed a spark plug that was practical to use, I was also told the story, that he called them Champion, and later sold the co. and began making plugs again under his Initials. A.C. But I don't recall what his name was. Hope this helps

There is a short discussion about Albert Champion in Crawford McKeans (sp) book "Sparks and Flames". Company later became part of DELCO as AC-Delco. DELCO came from Dayton Electrical Co.

BINGO, you guys are winners.

GM had a engineer type who put together the first coil/breaker points/DC voltage ignition, and named after him: Kettering Ignition. Also went on to help finance the Sloan-Kettering Cancer Institute.

GM needed a good spark plug, so bought Dayton Electric (DELCO) just to get one good man: Mr. Albert Champion. Part of his deal was to always have GM plugs display his initials.

This is about the time another guy walked out on GM, slamming the door and announcing he was going to start his own car company. Walter Chrysler.
