Well.... I had a New Idea Vari Speed that ran backwards... I couldn't find a magneto that turned in the proper direction so I just changed the engine to match one I had...

The F&J farm pumper has already been mentioned twice but also their Multimotor and model J run CCW. Some engines have a cam where you can change the position of spark timing contact to run CW. The later radiator cooled engines were available that ran in either direction.

Cheers! NICK

Chrysler 2 stroke industrial engines (used on tampers) culd be timed to run in either direction. The F-M rewind was also reversible This ia also how some golf carts and railroad maintenance jiggers changed direction. Slow the cengine almost to a stop then advance the timing far enough to cause the engine to kick back. Took some practice

Detroit Engine Works - both the Marine and Stationary engines could be run in either direction. The Galloway 5 HP could be reversed also. The REO cast iron 45 degree engines ran CCW, they took power off the cam - @1/2 speed. Some versions had a 4 to 1 reduction, and there were some put on Rotary Mowers that took power from the flywheel side.

My Lister light plant made in 1929 runs "backwards". Field Marshall Series I and II did, too. The Series III had a countershaft in the trans. to get six speeds, and the engine was made to run the "right way." (Not that that stopped them from running the other way!)

The Mercury Mk75 and Mk78 and Merc 700 engines made from 1957 to 1960 were not gear shifted outboard motors. They had a starter that would turn the engine the opposite way to obtain reverse. There was no neutral for these outboard engines. They were started in either direction. Oddly enough they made a left and right handed lower units for dual motor set up for counter rotating propellers. Counter rotating propellers would balance the motors when turning if the two motors rpms were not matched. If a boat were set up with two motors with the same rotation the boat would "drift" while turning. Weird.

My ELI will run either direction without any adjustment. It is 2 cycle with piston contact low tension ignition. Always in time and always retarded. Makes spark after top dead center.

No one has mentioned Gilsons. My brother in law has one that will run either way depending on the set up. Haven't tried to run it backwards yet that is this springs project.

Actually no, they run clockwise, as viewed from the flywheel side, all two cylinder Oilpull models past those listed ran CCW. John Deere two cylinders run CCW.
