You're on the right track, what with that square faced monkey wrench on the shaft end. With my luck, any helper would have already chewed up the nut with a pipe wrench.

The nut wasn't bad and came right off to my total dis-belief. I was extremely worried about using the wrench because of the very reasons that you state, but it worked fine. The patent date on the wrench is 1898, no slop or play in the threads and seems to be a very finely crafted wrench.

Mike~

No ID as of yet, oiler on the intake pipe indicates pre-1911. Got the jugs off by pressing the pistons out with a grease gun. I've got a long way to go on this one, but it will run again some day! I got a nice brass Schebler D carb for it and some white oak skids to mount it on. I will keep you posted!
